Concrete blocks 12 April, 2023

Do you want to know the new sustainable concrete?

We talk about him in this article. And it is that a work from the University of Córdoba has achieved a new sustainable concrete that uses sparkling water and captures CO2.

In this way, as we can read in an article in Concreto Online, which uses the Unit for Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCCi) of the University of Córdoba as a source, we read:

A research work that uses recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste (RCD) and carbonated water manages to dose a concrete that sequesters 181% more carbon dioxide than conventional concrete, improving its mechanical properties.

This new technology could be used in the manufacture of non-structural concrete elements, such as pavers, curbs, vaults and street furniture.

New sustainable concrete: avoid carbon dioxide emissions

We know that the construction sector has become a source of CO2 emissions, which is why the development of new materials and sustainable construction processes is important, and the new sustainable concrete is a most important step.

Precisely, a research work from the University of Córdoba has managed to dose concrete through a new procedure that eliminates carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and that could be used for the manufacture of paving stones, curbs, bovedillas and other types of urban furniture without steel armor.

This is a study developed jointly at the Belmez Higher Polytechnic School by the Construction Engineering (TEP-227) and Materials and Applications (FQM-391) groups of the University of Córdoba.

New concrete recipe

A new recipe that uses two fundamental ingredients: recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste, and sparkling water, the typical snack consumed in many bars and restaurants.

In the own words of José María Fernández, one of the authors of the study, it is about:

Of a pioneering strategy that manages to mitigate climate change and which is also based on the circular economy paradigm, in which waste and greenhouse gases are once again integrated into the manufacturing process.

What job does sparkling water do in sustainable concrete?

Well, as explained in the article: Carbonated water contains carbon dioxide, which, in turn, reacts with one of the components of cement (portlandite) to form calcium carbonate.

That is to say, it is achieved that the carbon in the form of CO2 disappears from the atmosphere and adheres to the concrete itself, filling its pores. Something that also improves resistance and mechanical properties.

A process known as accelerated carbonation, a technique that is in the early stages of research, but which is expected to achieve one of the objectives of the cement industry, the creation of sustainable concrete.

Concrete blocks in Poyatos

Remember that at Poyatos we have a range of machinery for the treatment of precast surfaces and for the special finishing of concrete blocks that includes: splitting machines, aging machines for paving stone finishing, shot-blasting and bush hammering machines, color dosing systems, ColorMix systems for the color gradient effect, etc.

Poyatos in the world

Since 1975, around the world, in more than 80 countries, we have exported and assembled turnkey factories.
