Continuation of information on the history of concrete regulations in Spain

We continue with the evolution of concrete regulations in Spain over the years:

PG-3/75

A new ministerial order, dated February 6, 1976, approves the General Technical Prescription Specifications for Road and Bridge Works of the General Directorate of Roads and Neighbourhood Roads, PG-3/75.

EP-77

“Royal Decree 1408/1977, of February 18, approves the first “Instruction for the project and execution of prestressed concrete works”, including the differences that are mentioned below with the text of EH-73.”

EP-80 AND THE EH-80

The EP-80 was approved by Royal Decree 1789/1980, of April 14 and later revised by RD 2695/1985, of December 18.

On the other hand, the "RD 2868/1980, of October 17, repeals and replaces the EH-73, gives a period of 6 months for its entry into force, with the relevant Transitory Provisions."

While the text of EH-80 adds the modifications of EP-77, with the exception of those referring to the chlorine ion, among others.

THE EH-82

New changes in concrete regulations in Spain with Royal Decree 2252/1982, of July 24.

THE EH-88

"Royal Decree 824/1988, of July 15, approves a version of the Instruction, which introduces various modifications related to aggregates."

PG-3 (MODIFICATIONS YEARS 1986-1990)

New modifications with:

“Order of July 31, 1986 approves the Instruction of the General Directorate of Roads on Surface Sections on Highways, with two new articles on concrete: 516 Compacted concrete and 517 Lean concrete. Circular Order 311/1990 CyE Sheets of technical specifications and vibrated concrete pavements modifies Article 550 Concrete pavements.”

EH-91

“Royal Decree 1039/1991, of June 28, modified the text of the EH-88, entered into force 2 months after its publication, with the usual transitory provisions.”

EP-93

Another new approval by Royal Decree 805/1993 repealed EP-80, with the appropriate Transitory Provisions. “The main differences with respect to the EH-91 have to do with the chlorine ion.”

EHE

“Through Royal Decree 2661/1998, of December 11, the EH-91, the EH-88, the EF-88 and the EP-93 are repealed and the EHE is approved, which enters into force on July 1, 1999, except for exceptions included in the Transitional Provisions.”

THE PG-3 (MODIFICATION OF THE YEAR 2002)

At the beginning of the new millennium, an ORDER FOM/475/2002 of February 13 was published, which updated Article 600 Concrete.

EHE-08

Royal Decree 1247/2008, of July 18, “approved the Instruction in force from July 18, 2008 until today, with the exceptions of the Transitory Provisions. It repealed the EHE and the EFHE.”

Regulations in Spain: structural code

As we anticipated at the beginning of article I, at the beginning of this year 2022, the Structural Code was put into force that establishes the requirements that concrete, steel and mixed steel-concrete structures must meet;and that came to replace the EHE-08.

In addition, the main aspects included in the new standard are:

a) Regulate the following matters not regulated by current regulations:

  • The management of existing structures during their useful life, which currently fall outside the scope of the Concrete and Steel Instructions.
  • Systems for the protection, repair and reinforcement of concrete structures.
  • Structures made with stainless steel.
  • Mixed concrete and steel structures.
